The 2026 Lidl Deutschland Tour runs from August 19–23, with five stages covering more than 740 kilometres and over 10,000 metres of climbing. It begins with a short, sharp prologue in Bad Orb and concludes with a potentially decisive finale in Heilbronn.

The 2.6km Bad Orb prologue may be brief, but it will immediately put the general-classification contenders under pressure. Every second will count in the fight for the first leader’s jersey, and there will be no room for a cautious start.

Stage 1, from Bad Orb to Schwäbisch Hall, is the race’s longest at 215km. Its rolling terrain should encourage aggressive racing, with the GC teams likely to push the pace and try to reduce the peloton before the finish. Stage 2, from Schwäbisch Hall to Offenbach an der Queich, appears to be the clearest opportunity for the pure sprinters. Stage 3, from Herxheim to Bad Dürkheim, features five categorised climbs and could prove to be a key day for the overall contenders, especially if the race is split by repeated attacks and a demanding pace over the hills.

The final 154km stage around Heilbronn is far from straightforward. Its hilly profile could still reshape the general classification, meaning that any rider with overall ambitions will need to be alert from the first kilometre to the last. This is a route with few opportunities to hide and no real day off for the GC contenders.

“Our full focus at the Deutschland Tour is the general classification, with Edoardo Zambanini as our leader,” says lead sports director Gorazd Stangelj. “This is not a mountain race, but there are also no truly flat stages. Edoardo is the rider who best fits that profile, and he is highly motivated for this race.

“There will be one or two stages where the peloton can break apart, and the bonus seconds could be crucial in determining the final overall result. The opening prologue is also very important: Edoardo must go all out in the time trial to put himself in a strong position from the start, rather than having to chase time later in the week.

“Of the remaining four stages, only one looks like a typical sprint finish. There, Phil Bauhaus will be our leader. On the other three rolling stages, Edoardo will be our main option.

“Fran Miholjević and Rainer Kepplinger will provide the mountain support, staying close to Edoardo throughout the stage and helping position him before the final. Alberto Bruttomesso and Nikias Arndt will take on the flatter sections and form part of Phil’s lead-out for the sprint.”
