Your favourite race and climb?

Giro d’Italia is my favourite race and the climb to The Etna Volcano is totally different experience, different landscapes and it is really special feeling to climb there.

Your best or most memorable result in pro cycling?

My best racing experiences and best results has been at the last Giro 2020. It was a big surprise for me to have two victories at the same Giro. I concluded my first Grand Tour victory, and my second victory happened in the third week in such a special scenery and at the Queens’ stage.

What are your personal ambitions for the season?

I want to continue with my constant progression, especially at the Grand Tours where I want to improve my Grand Tour racing level and my skills there and continue working hard for the Time Trails that are very challenging for me. I have worked a lot and really hard in TT in the last years and I have a big motivation to continue and improve in this way. It is a discipline in which you immediately see the results of the hard work.

After 71 days and over 11,000km of racing, how would you describe your 2020 season?

It was a really special season for me and everyone out there in this strange Covid-19 situation, but out from this, it has been really nice experience and quite easy and nice to adapt to my new team in which I felt comfortable and really good from the first moments. We had high goals and it was great to work for Mikel at Tour de France. Me and the team were satisfied after the Tour but I had an ambition to go for more and finish the season in Giro with a really special feeling finishing in the top five and being competitive and fighting for the podium throughout all three weeks. It was such a great experience there at The Giro, the team atmosphere, all my team-mates doing a great job,.. I felt really special there at the Giro.

What did it mean to you, winning the Spanish ITT National Championships?

Before the season, last year, it was one of my main objectives to win the National TT. When I saw the parcour, I knew it will be a big opportunity for me to win it. I did not miss this opportunity and I worked with a lot with my trainer Arits and my director Xavi. We had many adventures before and at the race and this mission of 3 years ended in the best possible way with the victory.

How did you feel about coming 5th at the Giro after racing for three weeks at the The Tour?

It was unexpected for everyone and for me. I went there to start strong and try to get the pink jersey at the first stages or try to achieve some stage wins, but not to think of fighting for the overall. After a good first week I realized that podium is possible and would be worth to fight for it. I believed in getting to the podium until the last stage. I had special circumstances to adapt so fast after Tour de France. At the end cycling is all about challenges and it was a special challenge to try to find where is my limit and try to do two Grand Tours in a row in a high level and achieving this important goal was one of my biggest career satisfactions.

What do you enjoy doing away from the bike?

I am sport geek. I love lots of different sports. I love surfing. Here in my surrounding, I have great conditions for surfing. I like to go to the mountain hiking, I like being in the nature as much as possible. Spending time with my friends and girlfriend means so much to me. We have a lot of social life here when I’m out of the season. We go to cinema, theatre, parties,… I like music in my way,… I have a nice life in sport and out of sports…

What are your thoughts on the Merida Reacto you will be racing this season?

I am excited to try a new Merida Reacto. I hope it is a great combination of climbing bike and aero bike and it will be as comfortable as this years’, but if it will be a lighter and faster one it will be so welcome.
