_Q&A

Your favourite race?

My favourite race for sure is the Tour de France but also Paris-Roubaix and the German races.

Your best or most memorable result in pro cycling?

My best result was the 7th place in Paris-Roubaix but also every victory we took with the team like the two with André Greipel on the Champs-Elysees was a moment which I will never forget.

What are your personal ambitions for the season?

My goals for 2021 are almost the same as every year. Stay healthy, hopefully have a normal season and helping in the sprints as well as helping my leader is much as possible.

What are the skills required to be a top lead out man like yourself?

For the lead-out you need for sure good power in between 30-45 seconds and some skills on the bike. You have to be able to fight for position and it’s also important to know how to ride the final.

As a family man, how to you balance the training and racing with life at home?

As a family person you need a good structure in training and at home. I try to leave early for training that I can be back early the day. My wife is a big key point and I’m super happy with having her by my side. We have two wonderful kids; my wife is also working but our family is living close to us if we need extra help.

What advice would you give to younger riders starting their careers in WorldTour teams?

I think a good advice is always to know what the team is asking from you. Then go for it and try to do your best to achieve that personal goal. As a young rider you also should listen to the experience riders from the team and when they tell you something it’s for sure for a reason. Maybe it’s also good to not give them too much pressure and give them time to become a good cyclist.

What are your thoughts on the Merida Reacto you will be racing this season?

The new Merida Reacto is one of the best bikes I’ve ever ridden on. Every year the bikes are getting more and more aerodynamic and this you feel on the new Reacto. It is even more stiff than the previous model and also in cornering/handling super smooth.
