Team Bahrain Victorious Set for Tour of Slovenia

The 28th edition of the Tour of Slovenia gets underway on the 15th of June as the riders take on a total of 792km and 9,152 vertical metres over the five-stage race.

This year’s edition starts in the town of Nova Gorica and ends in the historical city of Novo mesto. Bahrain Victorious will line up with a host of local talent with Jan Tratnik, Matej Mohorič, Domen Novak and debutant Matevž Govekar. Alongside them will be the German Jasha Sütterlin and the Australian Heinrich Haussler.

The race has a lot to offer, taking the riders through Slovenia’s picturesque landscape and historical towns, ranging from challenging climbs and rapid flats. The standout stages are stage 2 from Ptuj to Rogaška Slatina, which is technically very difficult, and the longest stage at 174,1 km. While on the queen stage (4), from Laško to Velika planina, the leaders will have a chance to break away and show their expertise on the two notable climbs at Černivec and Velika planina.

Team’s Sports director Gorazd Štangelj commented on plans for the Tour of Slovenia: “This year’s edition of the race is slightly changed and more challenging. Our strategy is to win every stage. Moreover, riders have a daily objective to achieve the best possible position in the race, depending on the type of race. Domen Novak, who successfully concluded Giro d’Italia, is our leader for GC.

The first stage is very technical, and we expect an attack from this year’s team road captain Matej. Heinrich and Matej will have a chance to take the lead in the second stage since it concludes with a bunch sprint. This is also an opportunity for Matevž, our newest team member, to display his cycling prowess. The third stage ends at the Old Castle of Celje with a steep ascent where Matej can win. In the 4th stage, the queen stage, we expect Domen to fight for victory. The last stage has a new addition, that is a climb on Trška gora, which is very interesting because of its technical descent to Novo mesto, where Matej could again be in a position for the lead.”
