Team Bahrain Victorious capped off a good week of racing on the final stage of Tour de Romandie as Sonny Colbrelli sealed the Green Jersey. At the same time, a strong time trial performance from Damiano Caruso saw him take 9th in the GC.
The race saw the team take its first WorldTour stage win as Colbrelli sprinted to victory on Stage 2. Sonny also finished runner up on Stage 1, and if not for a mechanical, would most likely finish in in the top three on Stage 3. The team also took two top-ten finishes, with Jan Tratnik on the prologue finishing 6th, while Caruso finished 8th on Stage 4.
Sonny Colbrelli was delighted with winning the points classification: “I’d like to thank everyone, all the staff and the guys for this week. I’m very happy I kept hold of the Green Jersey. Now I will take some recovery time before focussing on the next target, the Tour de France.”
Rolf Aldag was pleased with the teamwork displayed this week: “We look back to a really good team effort and considering the circumstances, with the weather testing people to their limits. We are lucky to have really good staff members that look after our riders, keeping them warm and healthy. The results from the team’s perspective were good. We won our first WorldTour stage of 2021 with Sonny and hung onto the green jersey, so I think we were good on the flat stages. We improved our time trial, which was pretty solid. And then with the top ten finish result with Damiano Caruso, who is still building up for the Giro, overall it’s a great result. We pointed out before how important it was to work as a team. Looking specifically at Sonny’s win, we’ve seen one of the best team efforts from the peloton for a long time, so we can be proud and happy about that.”
