The first edition of the “Settimana Ciclistica Italiana – Sulle strade della Sardegna” ended today after five stages entirely run on the roads of the Italian island.
The organizers scheduled the most challenging stages in the conclusive weekend, which saw Bahrain Victorious competing for a stage podium result and the green KOM jersey. Santiago Buitrago managed to grab it on stage 4 and defend the day after, brilliantly supported by four teammates. In fact, Damiano Caruso and Gino Mäder left the race with two stages to go for heading to the Olympics.
Both the conclusive two stages started and finished in Cagliari, featuring the greatest difference in altitude (about 2500m) on Saturday, while on the final day, the peloton had to face a tough climb of 7 km (max. 12%) to be repeated two times in 46 km as the only two KOM of the day. Atop the second climb at 101.4km of racing, Buitrago passed in 5th position as the first rider of the group chasing the day’s breakaway. That was enough to secure the green jersey of the Settimana Ciclistica Italiana.
Santiago Buitrago: “I’m delighted with this result as that is the first jersey I won amongst the pro riders. I’m also satisfied with my shape ahead of the second part of the season. Today I had to confirm the leadership of the KOM ranking and all my teammates helped me in succeeding. We finished off the great job done by the team and I think we showed a strong teamwork throughout the week”
