Sanchez Third Atop Megève on Stage 10 at Tour de France

Luis Leon Sanchez put on an impressive display in the breakaway on the 148km stage 10 from Morzine to Megève, taking third in a sprint to the line.

The breakaway was only allowed to go on the second climb of the day, Col de Jambaz, some 50 km into the race, as Sanchez and three other riders went up the road. The break grew as counterattacks started with another 21 riders bridged over, including Fred Wright.

With the break clear of the GC men by over 8 minutes, Fred Wright started to push the pace in the breakaway before Luis Leon launched his attack with 6km to go on the Montée de l’altiport de Megève, gaining a good advantage. However, in the final few kilometres, Sanchez was caught, and it came down to a sprint for the line where Magnus Cort (EF Education) took the win, while Sanchez settled for 3rd and Fred Wright crossed the line 9th.

Luis Leon Sanchez was pleased with the team effort: “It was a really good job by the team and a big thanks to Fred, who is a really strong rider, and we supported each other in the breakaway, which was good for me. Today I had a good feeling, especially for the final.

I thought it was better to attack at the end as the others had a stronger sprint than me. I was close to the win, but in the end, It’s the third position, which isn’t a bad result, but I would of much preferred the win. Tomorrow we’ve got a tough stage, and we will work for Damiano.”

Fred Wright put in another great effort through the break at this year’s Tour and was hoping for more after today’s effort: “I didn’t really expect to be in the breakaway, but there were so many attacks going, and I just thought to follow the wheels and found myself coming across to Luis. We had a good group of us, and we knew it was going to go to the finish, and we did what we could. I mean, I’m gutted, to be honest. I thought we were going to have it.”
