Mohorič 2nd at Tour of Slovenia As Pernsteiner 3rd at Tour de Suisse.

Bahrain Victorious took two podium finishes as Mohorič sprinted to second on Stage 3 at Tour of Slovenia, while Pernsteiner finished 3rd from the breakaway on Stage 4 at Tour de Suisse.

Matej Mohorič commented after the stage as he retained the points jersey for Team Bahrain Victorious and gained 9 seconds in the GC: “We expected that kind of scenario at the final. We planned to focus on starting the last climb in the front to calm down the group and help Phil stay in the peloton. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out. The pace was very high on the climb. The group split into more parts. I stayed in the first group with Jan, and Phil didn’t make it, and Jan and I tried to go for the stage ourselves. Jan tried to anticipate the sprint with a long-range attack, and he lined up the group, so it was easier for me to find a position for the sprint. Unfortunately, I hesitated a little bit, and I started a little bit too late, so I lost a sprint to the Caja Rural rider, and I have finished 2nd.”

At the Tour de Suisse, Pernsteiner showed his bravery yet again after being awarded the most combative rider on yesterdays stage, going in the breakaway on the Alpine course of stage 6. Along with Pernsteiner, Fred Wright and Gino Mäder were proactive in the breakaway. Pernsteiner held out all the way and crossed the line in third. Andreas Kron (Lotto Soudal) was awarded the win after Rui Costa (UAE-Emirates) was relegated due to a deviation from his line in the sprint. Wright was caught out on the final attacks and crossed the line just out of the top ten in 11th place.

The Austrian rider commented on his effort after today’s third place:
“I had amazing legs today. Early on the first climb, I was in the breakaway, but they caught us back. Then a big group went, and with a good effort, I closed the gap to the front. After that, there was a flurry of attacks. Everybody was keeping an eye a bit on me. In the end, I managed to be in front alongside Rui Costa and Kron. I knew that the sprint would have been hard for me. Therefore I tried to surprise them. But I had no chance against these guys. I’m also not so experienced in sprinting, and for sure, it’s still a skill that I can improve. Anyway, I had no regrets today. I tried everything. I’m looking forward to the next two days”.
