Mikel Landa takes 3rd place on stage 3 Vuelta Burgos and sits on 2nd place in GC

Mikel Landa is getting back in great shape after his injury, recovery process and hard training. Bahrain Victorious captain took a solid 3rd place on today’s first mountain stage 3 (Busto de Bureba – Espinosa de Los Monteros, 172.4 km) at La Vuelta a Burgos.

Roman Bardet (Team DSM) made a solo win after he managed to break at the last climb of Picon Blanco. By today’s victory, he also took the overall lead.

Domenico Pozzovivo (Qhubeka-NextHash) was the runner up, Mikel Landa (Team Bahrain Victorious) pass the finish line as 3rd, and the last from the chasing quartet, Mikel Nieve (Team BikeExchange) was 4th.

The whole team did an excellent job supporting Mikel Landa. In particular, Damiano Caruso and Mark Padun, who stayed with him on the day’s steep climb, the famous Picon Blanco, and finished in 6th place.

Bahrain Victorious showed superb teamwork at the Vuelta a Burgos so far, leading the team classification since stage 1. Moreover, we are also leading the young rider classification with Santiago Buitrago who took fourth place in the challenging finale at the opening stage.

After today’s stage, Mikel Landa sits in second place in GC, 45 seconds behind Roman Bardet (Team DSM) and 13 seconds ahead of Domenico Pozzovivo (Qhubeka-NextHash).

Mikel Landa: “Well, I didn’t feel so good at the climb, and unfortunately, we had a front wind, but as I know this climb very well, I managed my efforts, and I finished in a good position”.

SD Niel Stephens: “Today, the team rode well and together. We really tried our best to get a great result in the first mountain stage. We did well with the boys who controlled the race throughout the day and ran into the climb’s foot with high spirits. We went really strong on the climb and went early. Mikel could hold off a bit, but he went over the top quite well and descended back well into the finish. As far as we’re concerned, we’re really happy with how the boys worked all together. Mikel attacked hard at the top of the climb. He went over the top of the climb as 2nd and at the end, he just ran third in the stage. So that’s fantastic. The good news is that he’s up to second in GC, where three of our riders are in the top 10 and still leading as the best team and Santiago still wearing the white, best young rider’s jersey. So, it was a successful day. We didn’t pull off the stage, but we’re really going well towards a good podium finish here at Vuelta Burgos, and we’re really in high spirits going towards the upcoming Vuelta España”.
