Saturday, 8th August 2020 – The most unpredictable edition of Milano-Sanremo ended with a top ten result for Team Bahrain McLaren, as Matej Mohorič crossed the finish line in 10th place.
Unfortunately, our leader Sonny Colbrelli suffered from cramps and got dropped at the feet of the Poggio. On that last climb, Alaphilippe attacked with only van Aert able to follow him. Our Slovenian rider took the responsibility on the descent towards San Remo to bridge the gap to the leading duo, but without success. Van Aert beat Alaphilippe in Via Roma, arriving a couple of seconds before the main group of sprinters.
Franco Pellizotti, Team Bahrain McLaren Sports Director comments on our first Classic Monument of the season : “Too bad he couldn’t be there in the finale and then try to contest a podium finish. Seen how it unfolded, with the attack of Alaphilippe and then Van Aert, it was difficult to close the gap to them, but Mohorič tried anyway after the Poggio, using his descent skills. He didn’t succeed, but took a good 10th place”.
