Matej Mohorič suffered a bad crash on a descent on stage 9 at the Giro d’Italia and has abandoned the race on concussion protocols.
Mohorič was taken to Avezzano Hospital and was always conscious. He suffered a concussion and polytrauma with multiple abrasions. He will sleep at the team hotel and undergo the UCI post-concussion protocols, and be monitored by the team Head Doctor Daniele Zaccaria.
Daniele Zaccaria: “Matej was responsible following the crash. In some cases, riders like to continue, but he felt he was not feeling right. This is important when dealing with a concussion and head injuries. The helmet did its job, and the dynamics slowed the impact. I want to thank the Giro medical team, who were really well organized and did a great job.”
