Fred Wright put on another solid performance from the breakaway on stage 13 of the Tour de France. The 23-year-old British rider making a name for himself from his aggressive racing in breakaways, took second in a three-man sprint, only beaten by Mads Pedersen (Trek Segafredo).

After two gruelling mountain stages in the alps, the peloton didn’t allow the break to form easily, as many sprint teams saw this as one of the few remaining chances for a stage win at this year’s Tour de France. Eventually, a three-man breakaway formed and joined by Fred Wright and three other riders, who managed to bridge across.

The break eventually gapped the peloton by over three minutes, and despite the efforts of the sprint teams, the riders upfront managed to work together and keep a healthy gap.

The decisive move came with 10 kilometres remaining as Pedersen split the break with an attack, with Wright being able to follow. In the finale, Wright positioned himself perfectly in the three-man sprint but couldn’t match Pedersen’s strong finish to the line: “To beat Mads, I had to go on that last little kicker, but to be honest, I just didn’t have the legs. He surprised me when he attacked. I thought it would be Jorgenson (Movistar) or Küng (Groupama-FDJ), but he was just stronger than me.

Mads has won some big bike races, but I was there, and I was happy to make it, to be honest. I said before the stage I wanted to get into the break, and that was a hard one to get in. I’ll keep trying. There are a few more mountain stages.”
