Bahrain Victorious set for Paris-Nice.

Saturday 6th March – The 79th edition of Paris-Nice kicks off WorldTour stage races on 7th March. The race is commonly known as “The Race to the Sun”, with harsh conditions around Paris that subside closer to the South of France.

The eight-stage race covers everything from flat routes, climbs and an ITT. Stage 1 is two 80km laps of Saint-Cyr-L’École, while Stage 2 is a flat day of 188km from Oinville-Sur-Montcient to Ammily. Despite two category two climbs on Stage 1, both these stages are predicted to finish in a bunch sprint. The third stage is a 14km ITT in Gien, while Stage 4 will be the first real fight for the GC with six category two climbs and a mountain finish up a category one climb of Chiroubles. Stage 5 will be another flat stage and one for the sprinters covering 200km from Vienne to Bollene.

The final three stages will be extremely challenging over hilly terrain. The Col du Ferrier on Stage 6 will be one of the longest ascents of the race. Stage 7 is the queen stage, made up of four categorised climbs and finishes on Col de la Colmiane, a 16.3km climb with an average gradient of 6.3%. The final day is a shorter 110km stage, but with plenty of climbing still to do, consisting of five categorised climbs.

Team Bahrain Victorious has set up a team capable of taking on the various challenges of Paris-Nice. Sports Director Rolf Aldag commented on the race and team strategy “Paris-Nice is action-packed every day. You can lose Paris Nice at any moment. There are no easy stages. You have the chance of crosswinds, technical sections, TT and uphills. You need specialists and a strong team. We have Phil for sprint finishes, and like Provence, we have Jack and Dylan, who can go with the best for uphill finishes. I’m personally optimistic and working together as a team and can do well. Jack and Dylan are in great shape and can go for the GC. We will take it day by day and see if we get some stage wins too.”

Wout Poels had in his plan to ride Paris-Nice, but due to a slight injury to his left knee, he suffered after the crash on the last stage of the UAE Tour, team doctors, and management evaluated that he should stop and properly heal to come back in perfect shape for the upcoming races.

Team Bahrain Victorious lineup for Paris-Nice: Yukiya Arashiro, Phil Bauhaus, Jack Haig, Marco Haller, Heinrich Haussler, Gino Mäder, Dylan Teuns.
