A day after Fred Wright got us a white jersey in La Vuelta, the squad racing in Germany matched that effort.
Jonathan Milan took the chance given by Phil Bauhaus’ absence and finished just behind Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal), with Max Kanter (Movistar Team) rounding off the podium in a flat finish in Meiningen.
With a good result in yesterday’s prologue, the white jersey of the best young rider classification is well-deserved.
The stage saw a 3-man breakaway form early, only to be brought back just before the last climb. On the last ascent, there were several attacks, including from race leader Filippo Ganna, but all were unsuccessful. The pace on the climb was high, so some sprinters were dropped and not in the mix for the finale.

Jonathan Milan comments about his performance: “I’m pretty happy about the second place. The team did a fantastic job today. Also, Heinrich Haussler brought me to the perfect position for the sprint finish. In the end, Caleb Ewan won, as he came full gas in the last 100 meters. I was also full gas… We’ll see for the next stage, my condition is good, and I’m happy about it.”
Bahrain Victorious SD, Enrico Poitschke, says: “After Phil Bauhaus was forced not to start the race yesterday, Jonathan Milan was very motivated today to fight for the victory. The team did a perfect job, and Johnathan was strong; he passed without problems on the last climb. In the final, he had very good support from Haussler and the rest of the team. Johnathan beat some of the best sprinters in the world on route to second place. Now he’s in the white jersey. It was a good day for the team, and we look forward to the following stages.”
