Sonny Colbrelli Sprints to Second on Stage 1 of Tour de Romandie

The team put on a solid display bringing Colbrelli up to the final sprint. With two kilometres remaining, the Bahrain Victorious train came to the front leading Sonny up to the last 300 metres. Sonny showed his power, but unfortunately, Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) was on his wheel who came to the line with more speed taking the win.

Stage 1 of Tour de Romandie started in Aigle, with most of the race going through four laps of a circuit covering 168.1km before finishing in Martigny.

An early breakaway formed of 6 riders, with them gaining an advantage of around five minutes. The peloton controlled the gap and several other breaks, bringing it back with 8km to go for the sprinters to fight it out.

Jan Tratnik led Colbrelli to the 300m mark into a technical finish with damp roads against a headwind. Colbrelli kicked, but was pipped to the line taking second.

Sonny Colbrelli commented on his second-place: “Today it was a super effort for the team, and I had great support in the final and before. It was a super lead out by Tratnik. I went for the sprint from 300m, but Sagan followed me. I’ll try again after tomorrow, which is a good chance for me.”
